Resident Evil 6 is a 2012 survival-horror and action game developed and published by Capcom. It is a mainline entry in the Resident Evil series and was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October 2012, with a Windows release following in March 2013.

The game is built around several linked campaigns, each following different characters during a global bioterror crisis involving the C-virus.

Campaigns

Resident Evil 6 has four main campaigns. Leon S. Kennedy is paired with Helena Harper, Chris Redfield with Piers Nivans, Jake Muller with Sherry Birkin, and Ada Wong has her own route.

The campaigns overlap at points, showing the same wider crisis from different locations and perspectives. Capcom's official site describes the game as four separate but interlocking stories.

Gameplay

The game uses third-person shooting, melee attacks, dodging, quick-time events, co-operative play and character upgrades. It is more action-focused than earlier survival-horror entries in the series.

Players earn skill points and equip skills that affect damage, defence, item use and other abilities. The game also includes extra modes such as The Mercenaries.

Story

The story takes place in 2012 and 2013 and follows outbreaks linked to the C-virus. Settings include the United States, Eastern Europe and China.

The plot connects government conspiracy, bioterrorism, Neo-Umbrella, Chris Redfield's BSAA mission, Leon Kennedy's investigation and Jake Muller's importance as the son of Albert Wesker.

Release

Capcom announced that initial shipments of Resident Evil 6 surpassed 4.5 million units shortly after release. The company listed the genre as survival horror and the original platforms as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The game was later released on newer platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Reception

Resident Evil 6 divided players and critics. Some praised its scale, co-operative content and number of campaigns. Others criticised the heavier action focus, frequent quick-time events and weaker survival-horror atmosphere.

The game remains one of the clearest examples of the series' action-heavy period before later titles moved back towards slower horror and resource tension.
