Jill Valentine is a fictional character in Capcom's Resident Evil series. She was introduced as one of the two playable protagonists of the original Resident Evil in 1996, alongside Chris Redfield.
Jill is usually associated with S.T.A.R.S., Raccoon City, anti-Umbrella investigations and later bioterrorism cases. She is one of the franchise's longest-running protagonists.
First Appearance
In the first Resident Evil, Jill is a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, usually shortened to S.T.A.R.S. She enters the Spencer Mansion as part of the Alpha Team investigation and uncovers the biological experiments linked to the Umbrella Corporation.
The game presents her as more technically capable than Chris in some routes, including lock-picking and puzzle-solving advantages. Her story helped establish the series' mix of survival horror, resource management and character-based routes.
Resident Evil 3
Jill returned as the main protagonist of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The game follows her attempt to escape Raccoon City during the outbreak while being hunted by Nemesis, a bioweapon sent to eliminate surviving S.T.A.R.S. members.
Capcom's retrospective material describes Jill as a survivor of the Mansion Incident who returns to Raccoon City to investigate Umbrella before being trapped by the wider outbreak.
Later Role
Jill appears in Resident Evil: Revelations, Resident Evil 5, several remakes, spin-offs and crossover appearances. Later stories connect her to the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance and to long-running characters such as Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker.
Her role changes across the series, but the core traits remain consistent: training, composure, practical skill and a direct personal conflict with Umbrella's legacy.
Characterisation
Jill is usually written as disciplined and capable rather than loud or reckless. Her early role as a trained police-unit member made her different from ordinary civilian horror protagonists.
The character is also tied to some of the series' best-known lines and fan references, including the "Jill sandwich" joke from the original game's English localisation.
Reception
Jill is widely recognised among Resident Evil fans because she appears at several important points in the series' history: the original mansion incident, the fall of Raccoon City and later anti-bioterror operations.
Her designs have changed with the series, from the S.T.A.R.S. uniform and beret to later tactical and civilian outfits. These designs are often used in cosplay, merchandise and crossover appearances.
