Leon Scott Kennedy, usually styled as Leon S. Kennedy, is a fictional character in Capcom's Resident Evil survival-horror series. He was introduced as one of the two main playable characters in Resident Evil 2 in 1998, alongside Claire Redfield.
Leon is most often presented as a police officer or government agent dealing with bioterror incidents. His best-known appearances are in Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 6, with later remakes and animated projects expanding his role in the franchise.
First Appearance
In Resident Evil 2, Leon arrives in Raccoon City for his first day as a police officer and is immediately caught in the city's outbreak. The story pairs him with Claire Redfield and later links him to Sherry Birkin, Ada Wong and the wider Umbrella Corporation plot.
The original 1998 version made Leon one of the series' main human protagonists. The 2019 remake kept the same broad role while modernising his design, voice performance and relationship with the game's horror tone.
Resident Evil 4
In Resident Evil 4, Leon returns as a United States government agent assigned to rescue Ashley Graham, the daughter of the President of the United States. Capcom's official material describes the game as placing the player in Leon's role during a rescue mission in a rural European setting.
This entry changed Leon's public image. Instead of being mainly a rookie survivor, he became a trained agent with more combat ability, dry humour and a stronger action-horror role.
Later Appearances
Leon appears again in Resident Evil 6, where his campaign involves a bioterror attack and the death of the United States president. He has also appeared in animated Resident Evil films and series, crossover games and promotional material.
Capcom's Resident Evil portal describes his post-Raccoon City path as leading to government service after he and Sherry were placed under United States government protection.
Characterisation
Leon is usually written as calm under pressure, sarcastic, protective and weary rather than openly enthusiastic. His stories often place him between ordinary survivors and larger government or corporate forces.
His long-running connection with Ada Wong is one of the series' recurring character threads. Their relationship is usually presented as unresolved, shaped by attraction, distrust and conflicting loyalties.
Reception
Leon is one of the most recognisable characters in the Resident Evil series. His reputation comes from the contrast between his vulnerable rookie role in Resident Evil 2 and his more experienced agent role in Resident Evil 4.
The character is also strongly associated with the franchise's shift between survival horror and action horror. For many players, Leon represents both versions of the series: the trapped survivor and the trained bioterror agent.
