Grand Theft Auto V

Last revised by LocalRoot - 22 Jun 2026, 14:13

Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was first released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game is set mainly in Los Santos and the surrounding fictional state of San Andreas, a satirical version of Southern California. It follows three playable protagonists: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips.

Setting

Los Santos is a fictional city based on Los Angeles. The map also includes countryside, mountains, desert, small towns, highways, military and industrial areas, beaches, and wealthy suburbs.

The setting is used for crime stories, heists, driving, flying, exploration, satire, radio stations, random events, and side activities. Like earlier Grand Theft Auto games, it mixes a serious crime plot with parody of media, politics, celebrity culture, policing, technology, and American consumer life.

Story

The story follows three criminals whose lives become linked through heists and conflicts with gangs, private security, federal agents, and other criminal groups.

  • Michael De Santa is a retired robber living with his family under an arrangement with federal agents.
  • Franklin Clinton starts as a young repo worker and street criminal looking for a way into higher-level work.
  • Trevor Philips is a violent former associate of Michael who runs criminal operations in Blaine County.

The three-protagonist structure lets the game shift between different parts of the map, different social worlds, and different styles of mission.

Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto V uses third-person and first-person action, driving, shooting, stealth sections, flight, missions, and open-world exploration. Players can switch between the three protagonists in free roam and during some missions.

The heist structure is one of the game's main design ideas. Some robberies require planning choices, crew selection, preparation missions, and different approaches. Outside the main story, players can buy property, play sports, customise vehicles, trade stocks, collect items, and explore the world.

Grand Theft Auto Online

Grand Theft Auto Online is the multiplayer component connected to Grand Theft Auto V. It uses the same broad setting but runs as a live online service with missions, races, heists, businesses, properties, vehicles, events, and regular updates.

The online mode became a major part of the game's long life. Rockstar now markets Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online together across current platforms.

Releases and Updates

The original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions were followed by expanded releases with improved visuals, more traffic and wildlife density, new content, first-person mode, and later current-generation upgrades.

The Windows release added PC-specific settings and support for higher resolutions and frame rates depending on hardware. Later releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S added faster loading, new graphics modes, and other platform-specific improvements.

Reception and Legacy

Grand Theft Auto V became one of the most commercially important games of the 2010s. Its long sales life came from the single-player game, repeated platform releases, and continuing support for Grand Theft Auto Online.

The game is also controversial. Common criticisms include its violence, satire, treatment of some characters, online monetisation, and the way the success of Grand Theft Auto Online affected expectations for single-player expansions.
